Project Overview
SmartTrack is a sophisticated multi-tenant logistics and shipment management platform engineered for a UK-based logistics company managing thousands of daily shipments across multiple sales channels. The system was designed to replace a patchwork of disconnected tools—spreadsheets, emails, and standalone shipping software—with a single, unified platform that provides end-to-end visibility from order placement to final delivery. Each tenant on the platform operates within their own isolated environment with customized branding, pricing rules, and integration configurations, while the parent company maintains oversight through a centralized reporting dashboard. The platform processes real-time tracking updates from multiple carrier APIs, automatically routes orders based on configurable business rules, and generates comprehensive analytics reports that drive operational decision-making.
The Challenge
The client managed logistics operations across multiple eCommerce platforms and retail clients, each with different tracking requirements, carrier preferences, and reporting needs. Their existing workflow involved manually copying data between systems, leading to delayed shipment updates, frequent errors in order fulfillment, and an inability to provide clients with real-time visibility into their shipment status.
Our Approach
We designed the platform with multi-tenancy as a foundational principle, using database-level isolation to ensure data security between clients. Redis caching was implemented for real-time tracking data to handle thousands of concurrent status queries without database bottlenecks. The system was deployed on Google Cloud Platform with auto-scaling to accommodate peak shipping periods like Black Friday.
The Solution
The delivered platform features automated order ingestion from Shopify, WooCommerce, and custom storefronts via RESTful APIs, intelligent carrier selection based on destination and package attributes, real-time tracking aggregation from 20+ carrier APIs, and a comprehensive reporting suite with exportable analytics. Each tenant gets a branded portal with their own login, dashboard, and configuration options.
